HAPPY WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY!
Happy World Environment Day!
World Environment Day was established in 1972 to raise global awareness around the protection of the environment. The day brings together millions of people, governments and businesses worldwide to tackle environmental challenges. The environmental theme and host country changes each year: from plastic pollution to land restoration, from Korea to Saudi Arabia. The theme and host for world environment day 2026 is ‘Inspired by nature. For climate. For our Future’, hosted by Azerbaijan.
How can I contribute to World Environment Day?
- If you don’t already, recycling your household rubbish is a great place to start! Check your local council’s ‘bins, rubbish, and recycling’ page to find out what can and can’t be recycled, and what bags/bins waste must go in. (Beanies jars and lids can be recycled, but you must take the liner out the lid!)
- Donate/swap old clothes and books rather than throwing them in the bin! You know the phrase, ‘one person’s trash is another person’s treasure’: this switch kills two birds with one stone by reducing waste in landfills and helping out the less fortunate.
- Build a bug hotel! Gardens are becoming flatter and more open, leaving less space for wildlife. However, by building a small bug hotel in your garden, you can create a space for nature to thrive and support biodiversity! (Find out how to build a bug hotel here)
- Reusing and upcycling. Taking waste materials and reusing them/ turning them into something new can be a great way to help the environment and save yourself some money!
What’s the difference between reusing and upcycling?
Reusing is using an item again for the same or similar purpose. For example, you could buy one plastic hand soap bottle and keep refilling it from a larger refill pouch rather than buying and binning multiple, single-use, plastic bottles, or you could keep an old jam jar and reuse it to store some homemade jam!
Upcycling is repurposing waste items by turning them into products of a higher value. If you’re good at DIY, you could turn old pallets into furniture. You could even turn a stained t-shirt into a trendy tote bag!
How can I reuse and repurpose my Beanies jars?
- The jars are food safe and airtight, so you can use them to store snacks at home or to take on the go!
- Try using the jars to start off plant seedlings or to grow your own windowsill herbs!
- Upcycle an empty jar it to a ‘full on flavour’ candle. Take inspiration from our 40+ Beanies flavours, or create a completely new scent of your own!
