Will you be my Valentine?

We all know that Valentine’s Day is the ultimate day of love. It comes around every February 14th, and people take the day to spend time with their loved ones and romantic partners. Modern traditions include going for a meal, for drinks and buying gifts: big or small. Today, people also celebrate this time of year with friends, such as on Galentine’s Day: the 13th of February.

Women tend to be the main embracers of this holiday. Studies indicate that 40% of men forget the date, yet for women, this figure is only 22%. However, males are more likely to spend more money on the occasion, treating their partners to gifts and dinner.

So how did Valentine’s Day come about?

The idea originated in ancient Rome before it became a celebration of Saint Valentine in the 8th century. The celebration started as a feast but became associated with romance in the 14th and 15th Centuries.

The typical Valentine’s gifts consisted of handwritten poems and flowers, particularly roses, as they represented love in all forms. In the Victorian era, people also exchanged chocolates as a symbol of love. As the tradition progressed, gifts such as jewellery were given as a sign of affection.

In recent years, the array of Valentine’s merchandise has dramatically increased. The assortment now includes candles, novelty items and even funky teas and flavoured coffees. Coffee also pairs well with more traditional Valentine’s presents such as chocolates.
